Waste Treatment Operator

The primary function of the job is to maintain the Waste Treatment Operation according to specifications in order to neutralize and treat spent chemicals so that they can be disposed of safely and legally in accordance with established manufacturing/waste treatment procedures/processes.

RESPONSIBILITIES ASSOCIATED WITH PERFORMING THE JOB

  • Analyses solutions and inputs record keeping on the computer on a daily basis
  • Inspects and cleans area on a daily basis i.e. solutions/spills
  • Observes safety rules for handling various chemicals, check machine vents to ensure air vents are working.
  • Neutralize and treat spent chemicals to make them safe for disposal on a daily basis
  • Operates filter pressing machine that separates water from waste sludge
  • Operates water purifying machine to ensure Government Standards
  • Keep water drain clean of chemical impurities…can never allow hazardous chemicals down the drain
  • Logging of all chemicals treated.
  • Obtain chemicals from stockroom to furnish plating lines
  • Responsible to assist in the maintenance of electrolytic plating lines
  • Performs maintenance and cleaning of machinery on a weekly basis
  • Performs cleaning and minor repairs of all equipment and machinery used for waste treatment on a weekly basis
  • Responsible for the consequences of errors such as hazardous chemicals going down the drain, waste chemicals improperly disposed of, damage to equipment etc. all of which could result in wasted production time, plant closure, company fines, and loss of productivity.
  • Must be willing to help in other areas as required

SKILL/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB

  • 10-12 years of general or technical education is required; skills acquired through extensive on-the-job training under supervision of experienced worker for a period of up to 1 year is necessary to become proficient
  • a mechanical aptitude is essential
  • good reading, writing, and arithmetic abilities are required
  • manual dexterity, speed, accuracy and hand-eye coordination is essential to maximize production and minimize waste materials
  • must be knowledgeable of proper safety standards and procedures
    • must be able to cooperate and work effectively with others to ensure efficient and smooth operation

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB

  • a physically demanding job as considerable standing, bending, and lifting is required in operation of machinery; frequent physical activities including carrying, reaching, pulling, pushing, twisting, grasping; the pace is controlled b machines and production scheduling.
  • must be able to respond to tight production deadlines during regular and peak periods and to last minute demands and requirements.
  • many tedious and repetitious activities and movements requiring constant intense concentration and attention to detail and involves considerable standing in one spot.
  • Creative abilities are involved in trying to maximize production while minimizing machine downtime,
  • Frequent periods of intense concentration is required when handling hazardous chemicals, calculating and adding correct amounts to tank

WORKING CONDITIONS WHILE PERFORMING THE JOB

  • work involved a high degree of visual attention involving constant attention to detail when operating machines, inspecting output and handling chemicals
  • works on the shop floor, exposed to dirty/dusty, hot/cold, noisy, oily/greasy, odorous conditions, additionally exposed to chemical substance.
  • Potentially dangerous work areas because of the use of hazardous chemicals
  • overtime and shift work are required
